The big idea: Real estate investing indeed offers many opportunities to profit in good times and bad, but it is also fraught with risks if you’re not careful. Learn the basics first before embarking on more complex deals.

What’s good: This is one of the bestselling real estate investing guides of all time, and for good reason. Author Gary Eldred offers a very sound and sober guide, steering clear of hype and exaggeration typical of many real estate guru books. It’s amazing how much he covers, from finding and financing properties to renting and selling. This revised edition includes new strategies after the property crash of 2008-2009.

What’s bad: This can be quite overwhelming for the beginner. It can also start to be complicated once the author introduces technical concepts. It’s not easy reading but it’s definitely a reference guide you should keep if you’re serious about real estate investing.

Recommendation: Buy it
